Beth's Story

My name is Beth Taylor.  At the age of 35 I decided to have breast augmentation.  This decision dramatically changed my life.  This is my story that tells in detail, my horrific journey after making the worst decision I have ever made in my life.

I was very thin, 5' 7 something and weighed 117 pounds.,  I was not happy being that thin or small breasted.  I hated the way I looked in clothes and pretty much obsessed about it for some time.  I picked apart every inch of my body.  Looking back, and looking at those old pictures makes me wonder how I could have thought that anything was out of place or abnormal.

I researched on the internet for about a year before deciding to get saline implants.  I didn't find anything that would indicate that they were harmful to your health.  In fact, I didn't find anything that would alarm me in any way!  Silicone implants recently had been banned from the market and I knew that they were not safe but the new and improved saline implants were safe!

I made an appointment with my plastic surgeon to discuss surgery.  He also reassured me.  Told me that they were very safe.  The worst thing that could happen would be a rupture which was not very common.  If I were to have a rupture they were filled with saline and the saline would just work its way out of my body.  He also said that the operation to have it removed and replaced with another implant was so minor that it could be done right in his office!  At the time I had no idea that this was all a big lie!

Although, silicone had been taken off of the market at that time, he told me that he would prefer to use silicone implants although he could not.  He believed that they were safe.  He felt that a few women became ill and attributed it to their implants so everyone decided to jump on the bandwagon so to speak.  I believed him!  He was a doctor after all and they were supposed to know more about this type of thing than me.  Right?

On May 3, 1996, I went under the knife and got my saline implants.  I was excited and couldn't wait to see the new me!  I was assured that they were safe so I felt that there was really nothing to worry about.  After all they were saline filled.  I thought back about what my doctor told me... The worst that could happen was a rupture.  The saline would just flush itself out of my body and I would have to have the implant  replaced.  This procedure was so minor that it could be done right in the plastic surgeons office.  He would just make an incision, take the ruptured implant out and pop in a new one.  I was also told that ruptures were very uncommon but could happen.  I was told that not only were they safe but they would last a lifetime.  I thought about all of this as I was being wheeled in for the surgery.  I felt that nothing bad could happen to me as my plastic surgeon's words reverberated through my head.

I had no idea what lay ahead of me..............
